Session 1: Marxist microeconomics. The labor theory of value, use vs exchange value, W = s + c + v. The organic composition of capital & rate of profit. Session 2: Marxist macroeconomics (political economy & historical materialism). Modes of production & exchange, class relationships to production. Analysis of contemporary & current states. Readings: Mao, “On the Correct Handling of Contradictions Among the People”; Trotsky, “In Defense of October”; Engels, “Origin of the Family, Private Property & the State” (selections); selections from Capital vol 1 & 2
Session 3: International political economy. Trade, colonialism & imperialism. Colonial & semi-colonial relationships. Marxist theory of crisis. Readings: Mariategui, “Seven Interpretive Essays on Colonial Reality”; Lenin, “Imperialism: the Highest Stage of Capitalism.”
